Full tang, and why it is on the spec sheet

Full tang means the blade and the handle core are one continuous piece of steel running from the point all the way to the butt, with the rosewood fitted to it as two scales and pinned through. Nothing is glued into a socket, nothing is welded on, and there is no join to work loose. It is heavier than a hidden tang and that is the point: the weight sits back into the hand and the knife balances near the choil instead of pulling forward.

This is the structural difference between this knife and the rest of the rack. If you are going to baton it through a branch or lean on it, this is the construction you want.

What 1075 gets you

1075 is plain high-carbon steel: iron and about three quarters of one percent carbon, with no chromium and no alloying tricks. It hardens predictably, takes a fine edge and comes back to sharp on an ordinary stone in a few minutes. The trade is rust. Leave it wet and it will spot, so wipe it dry, keep a film of oil on it, and let it go dark with use.

The profile is a seax. The ergonomics are modern.

The spine runs level out of the handle and then falls in one long straight clip to the point, single-edged, with a wide flat grind and a crisp grind line running parallel to the spine. That silhouette is the seax, and it is why the knife reads as Norse.

The handle is another matter and we would rather say it than let you assume. There is a rounded finger choil cut where the blade meets the handle, the underside is contoured to the hand and the butt swells to lock your grip. None of that is period. Excavated seax handles are simple wood or horn on a narrow tang, without a choil and without contouring. This one is built to be used in the field for hours, and that is a working choice rather than a historical one.

Rosewood

The scales are rosewood, a dense oily hardwood that resists moisture and takes a soft satin polish rather than a plastic shine. It runs deep reddish-brown through to near-black, and the striping is different on every piece of timber. Expect your knife to differ from the photographs in grain and in tone. Three brass pins hold each scale, and the brass will darken with handling.

Make it yours

Both the blade flat and the rosewood handle can be engraved. A name, a date, a short line in runes. Engraving is hand-etched to order and adds a few days to dispatch. Choose it in the configurator above.

The sheath

Genuine leather, dyed a deep oxblood, stitched in cream thread with black leather crosses set into the face and a strap that studs shut over the handle. A belt loop on the back carries it on the hip.

What does full tang mean and why does it matter?

The blade and the handle core are one continuous piece of steel running from the point to the butt, with the rosewood scales pinned onto it. There is no join to work loose, so the knife takes hard use better than a hidden-tang build and balances further back in the hand.

What steel is the blade?

Hand-forged 1075 high-carbon steel. It is not stainless, so it takes a finer edge and sharpens more easily, but it will spot if left wet and will darken to a patina over time.

How big is this Viking seax knife?

The blade is 7.5 inches (190 mm) and the handle is 5 inches (127 mm), so the knife measures 12.5 inches (318 mm) overall.

What is the handle made of?

Rosewood scales fixed to the full tang with three brass pins. Rosewood is dense and oily, so it handles moisture well. Grain and colour vary from piece to piece, which is why no two handles look the same.

Can it be engraved?

Yes. Both the blade flat and the rosewood handle can be engraved to order, hand-etched. Engraving adds a few days to dispatch.
