Algiz (ᛉ) is the Elder Futhark rune most associated with protection. Its reconstructed name means "elk", and its striking antler-like shape has made it the most popular single rune in modern jewelry and tattoos. In the Elder Futhark it carried the sound z; in the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc it survived as Eolhx, the "elk-sedge".

What does Algiz mean?
Honesty first: Algiz is one of the runes whose Elder Futhark name is a scholarly reconstruction — no ancient text spells it out. The reconstruction points to "elk" (the great European moose), an animal that defends itself formidably, which fits the rune's protective reputation.
What we do have in writing is the Old English rune poem's verse for its descendant, the elk-sedge — a marsh grass with blade-sharp edges:

That is a remarkable image for a "protection" symbol: not a shield that passively blocks, but something that makes the attacker pay. Whoever grasps at the elk-sedge bleeds. If you choose Algiz as a personal mark, that is the attested idea behind it — protection with an edge.
Why is Algiz called the "life rune"?
In later Scandinavian use the same shape (ᛦ, called maðr) stood for "man", and in 19th–20th century esoteric revivals the upright form was dubbed the "life rune" and its inversion the "death rune". Those labels are modern, not Viking-Age — worth knowing if historical authenticity matters to you.
