Choosing a Thor's Hammer Necklace
Silver, bronze or steel?
Surviving Viking-Age hammers were made in silver, bronze and iron. Our handmade pendants come in 925 sterling silver and bronze, and sterling silver holds the finest carved detail. Stainless steel is the hard-wearing everyday choice, and many of the king's chain necklaces are made of it.
Thor's Hammer Necklaces, FAQ
What does a Thor's hammer necklace mean?
It is most often read as protection and blessing. Thor was the god who stood between the gods and the giants, and his hammer also hallowed things: in the Eddic poem Þrymskviða it is laid in the bride's lap to bless a wedding. The surge in wearing hammer pendants late in the Viking Age is widely read as a pagan answer to the Christian cross.
Did Vikings really wear Thor's hammer pendants?
Yes. About a thousand have been found in Scandinavia, the British Isles, the Baltic and Russia, according to the Danish archaeologist Else Roesdahl, many of them in women's graves. One from Købelev in Denmark, found in 2014, is inscribed hmar is, "this is a hammer".
Is it Odin's hammer or Thor's hammer?
Thor's. Mjölnir belongs to Thor, the god of thunder. Odin's own weapon is the spear Gungnir.
Does a Thor's hammer pendant come with a chain?
It depends on the listing. Some are sold as a pendant only, others on a leather cord or as a complete king's chain necklace, so check the product page for what is included.
