Rollo was a real historical Viking leader. He took control of land around the lower Seine and became the first ruler of Normandy in the early tenth century, and the dukes of Normandy, including William the Conqueror, traced their descent from him. No shield of Rollo's survives, and personal heraldry of the kind people picture today did not yet exist in his lifetime, so the design on this pendant is a modern Viking-styled shield motif named in his honour rather than a reconstruction of anything he owned.
