Tradition dates Iceland's Norse settlement to around 874, when Ingólfr Arnarson made his home where Reykjavík stands today. The settlers' descendants preserved the Old Norse language and wrote the sagas — which is why modern Icelandic remains the closest living language to that of the Vikings.
