The Mammen style takes its name from a richly decorated axe found in a chieftain's grave at Mammen, Denmark, and defines Viking art of the later 10th century: energetic animal and foliage ornament with boldly contoured, billowing lines. A word of honesty about the symbol itself — the name ægishjálmr appears in Old Norse poetry, but the eight-armed stave as drawn here comes from later Icelandic magical manuscripts, where it was a sign of protection and courage.
