The ouroboros is an ancient symbol of a serpent eating its own tail, often read as introspection, the eternal return, and the endless cycle of creation and destruction, life and death. In a Norse setting the image naturally calls to mind Jörmungandr, the Midgard Serpent that encircles the world biting its own tail — a kindred idea, though not the same symbol. The runes here are Elder Futhark, the oldest runic alphabet. Find more coiled designs in our serpent jewelry collection, or dig deeper into Norse symbols in the Symbol Library.
