What is the bright cross over the face?
It is the brow band and nose guard of a helmet, left polished while the skull behind is darkened. The only reasonably complete Viking Age helmet, from Gjermundbu in Norway, has exactly that spectacle shaped guard over the eyes and nose.
Is the skull a Viking symbol?
The skull is not a documented Viking Age motif. It is modern jewellery iconography, and we describe it that way rather than inventing a Norse meaning for it.
