Bloomery iron comes out heterogeneous and slag-streaked, and no amount of skilled forging removes that entirely. Steel this clean has to be melted, and that means crucible steel, a technology documented in Central Asia and Persia at the time but not in Europe. A mark that valuable gets copied, and here the metallurgy and the lettering line up in a way that is hard to ignore. In Williams' survey, the blades that tested as crucible steel tend to carry the inscription with the second cross inside the name: +VLFBERH+T. Many inferior blades carry it at the end instead: +VLFBERHT+. And a large number of those end-cross blades turned out to be ordinary bloomery iron, some of them steel in name only. One letter position of difference, and underneath it, frequently, a fundamentally worse sword.
Be careful with what this does and does not prove. It is a pattern reported from one sample of 44 blades, not an infallible authentication rule, and nobody should date or grade a sword on cross position alone.
