Personalized Viking Blades

Every piece below can be engraved with a name, a date, or a word that matters, on the blade flat or the handle. Choose Roman inscription capitals, or have your text transliterated into runes: the Elder Futhark, the Younger Futhark or the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc. Viking Age Scandinavians wrote in Younger Futhark; most shops use the names interchangeably, and we will tell you which one you are getting.

Engraving is $15 and adds three to five days to the build. Your text is engraved into the steel, clean, precise and permanent, so it never rubs off.

Type a name, see it in runes

Elder Futhark has twenty-four runes and no exact match for every Latin letter, so C, K and Q share ᚲ, and V and W share ᚹ. We etch what you approve at checkout.

Made to order, so read this first

An engraved piece is cut for you and cannot be resold, so engraved orders are not returnable unless the piece arrives faulty or the text differs from what you approved. Check your spelling at checkout. We engrave exactly what you submit.

Timing and shipping

Blades ship in three to five business days; engraving adds another three to five. Everything leaves oiled, sheathed and tracked. Bladed goods need an adult signature on delivery, and some regions restrict them, so the cart flags a restricted address before you pay.

Personalized Viking Blades: a Buyer's Guide

Every blade in this collection can be engraved to order with text of your choice, a name, a date, or a short word, up to twenty characters, on the flat of the blade or the handle. You choose Roman inscription capitals or Elder Futhark runes, the engraving is $15, and it adds three to five days to a piece that is otherwise hand-forged from carbon or stainless steel. The result is cut into the steel, so it is permanent and does not rub off.

What to engrave

The most popular choices are a name and a date, a wedding date, a birth year, a set of initials. A short Norse word or motto also works: browse ideas in our Old Norse translator or our Viking quotes. Or engrave a single rune for a concept such as protection or strength, each of the Elder Futhark rune meanings stands for an idea as well as a sound. Keep it under twenty characters so the letters stay bold and legible.

Latin letters or Elder Futhark runes

You can have your text in plain Roman capitals, or transliterated into Elder Futhark, the twenty-four-character runic alphabet the Norse actually wrote in. Because the futhark has no exact match for every Latin letter, some are shared: C, K and Q all become ᚲ, and V and W both become ᚹ. To see how your name will look before you order, type it into the preview above or use our full Rune Translator, and read our guide to Viking runes for how the futhark systems work.

Which blades take an engraving

Any piece with a clean flat or handle: our hand-forged Viking seax and Viking-styled knives and Viking axes are all here if they have somewhere to cut. Fully patterned blades (Damascus, for instance) are left out, because there is no clean surface to take the text. New to the form? Our guide explains what a seax is, from the size types to what separates a serious blade from a wall-hanger.

Caring for an engraved blade

An engraving on carbon steel stays crisp for life as long as the blade is looked after, wipe it dry, keep a thin film of oil on the steel, and store it out of its sheath. Our guide on how to care for a seax knife covers oiling, sharpening and storage in full. Stainless-steel pieces need less attention and hold an engraving just as well.

A personal Norse gift

An engraved blade is one of the more memorable gifts you can give a partner, a father, a groomsman or a history lover, something with their name or a date that matters cut permanently into forged steel. Every piece ships oiled, sheathed and tracked. Engraved orders are made for one person and cannot be resold, so check your spelling at checkout: we engrave exactly what you approve.

Engraving questions

These answers feed the FAQPage schema for this collection.

How many characters can I engrave?

Twenty, including spaces. Shorter reads better: a single name or a date sits best on a blade flat.

Can you engrave runes instead of letters?

Yes. Pick Elder Futhark and we transliterate what you type. Elder Futhark has twenty-four runes, so some Latin letters share one: C, K and Q all become ᚲ, and V and W both become ᚹ. Your original spelling is kept with your order alongside the runes.

How much does engraving cost and how long does it take?

Engraving is $15 per piece and adds three to five business days on top of the normal three-to-five-day build.

Where on the blade is the engraving placed?

On the blade flat or on the handle, whichever you choose. Each product page shows the placements that piece allows: an axe is engraved on the handle or the cheek of the head.

Can I return an engraved blade?

Only if it arrives faulty or the text differs from what you approved at checkout. Engraved pieces are cut for one person and cannot be resold, so they are otherwise final.

What should I have engraved?

A name and a date are the most popular: a wedding date, a birth year, or a set of initials. A short Norse word or motto works well, or a single rune for a concept like protection or strength. Shorter text is cut bolder; longer text still works, and we confirm the fit before we cut. It makes a personal gift for a partner, a father, or a groomsman.

Can I see my name in runes before I order?

Yes. Type it into the live preview above to see it transliterated into Elder Futhark, or use our full Rune Translator. We engrave exactly what you approve at checkout.

Is the engraving permanent, or will it wear off?

It is cut into the steel, not printed or coated, so it does not rub off. On carbon-steel blades, keep the piece lightly oiled and the engraving stays crisp for life.
